Highlights of gorilla trekking in each country

Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest houses nearly half the world's mountain gorilla population with over 400 individuals across multiple habituated families:

  • More permit availability with multiple daily departures across four sectors
  • Longer, more adventurous treks through dense, ancient rainforest terrain
  • Lower permit costs at $800 per person compared to Rwanda's $1,500
  • Multiple gorilla encounters possible with permits for consecutive days

Volcanoes National Park offers the most accessible and a more luxurious gorilla trekking experience:

  • Shorter, easier treks typically 1‑3 hours through bamboo forests
  • More luxury accommodation options, including One&Only Gorilla's Nest
  • Easier access just 2.5 hours from Kigali Airport

Comparing Uganda vs Rwanda for gorilla trekking

Permit Costs

Rwanda's gorilla permits command $1,500 compared to Uganda's $800 – nearly double the price.

This significant gap reflects Rwanda's positioning as a premium destination, but it doesn't necessarily translate to a better trekking experience. It is true that Rwanda has a higher number of luxury accommodation options, and the trekking is generally considered slightly easier and more predictable.

Uganda's lower price point makes gorilla trekking accessible to a wider range of travelers without compromising on the quality of the experience, and frees up budget to invest in other experiences if you're trekking the gorillas as part of a wider adventure.

Access and Logistics

Volcanoes National Park sits just 2-3 hours from Kigali's international airport. The roads are excellent, and the journey itself is scenic, winding through rolling hills dotted with tea plantations.

Uganda demands more commitment. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is an 8-9 hour drive from Entebbe International Airport. However, Uganda has a solid internal flight network so we always recommend flying in. The flight is around 2 hours and you'll be treated to stunning views as you fly over!

If you're trekking in Uganda, you will need an overnight stay in Entebbe on arrival.

The Trekking Experience

Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lives up to its name with dense vegetation, steep terrain, and muddy trails. You'll push through thick undergrowth, scramble over fallen logs, and when you encounter a gorilla family, the sense of achievement amplifies the magic.

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park provides a more manageable trek through bamboo forests and open glades. The terrain is generally easier, making it suitable for a broader range of fitness levels. The experience feels more structured but no less profound when you're sitting meters from a silverback.

For many, gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Habituation Advantage

Uganda holds a unique card that Rwanda simply doesn't offer – the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Available exclusively in Bwindi's Rushaga sector, this allows you to spend four incredible hours with semi-habituated gorilla families alongside researchers and trackers.

You witness the gradual process of these magnificent creatures becoming accustomed to human presence, offering insights far beyond the standard one-hour encounter.

Beyond the Gorillas: Additional Wildlife Experiences

Chimpanzee Trekking

The Southwest of Uganda provides some of the most varied and unique wildlife experiences in Africa. Kibale National Park houses around 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of Africa's most reliable spots for chimp sightings. The success rate here hovers around 90%, and you'll hear their distinctive calls echoing through the dense canopy long before you see them. The experience feels incredibly intimate, you might find yourself just meters away from a mother teaching her young to forage.

Rwanda's chimpanzee tracking in Gishwati Forest offers a quieter, more adventurous alternative, though the chimps here are less habituated. This means encounters can be more challenging but also more authentic, as you're observing truly wild behavior.

Big Game Safari Experiences

Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to the famous tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. The Kazinga Channel boat safari brings you face-to-face with massive pods of hippos and some of Africa's largest elephant herds.

Rwanda's Akagera National Park has undergone remarkable restoration, reintroducing lions and rhinos to complete the Big Five. While smaller than Uganda's parks, Akagera offers an intimate safari experience with excellent wildlife densities across its 1,122 square kilometers.

Combining with other experiences

For combining with classic East African game safaris, both countries work brilliantly. Uganda pairs naturally with Kenya's Maasai Mara or Tanzania’s Serengeti as you can fly directly from Entebbe to the airstrips in both parks.

Rwanda's position makes it perfect for luxury combinations with other countries in East Africa. We often design adventures that flow from mountain gorillas to the Great Migration
